nag is snake in Hindi, naga is not derived from nag. naga is also a Burmese word for pierced ears. Nagas are not related to Indians or its religion, the nagas are a collection of tribes, who have no culture links or can they be compared with the main stream Indians. They are racially, ethically and linguistically different to Indians.

Saying this it should not come as a surprise that the Indians would try to claim the Nagas as part Indian race. By using the only word which comes close to the word NAGA that being nag.

Thank you for your feedback.
Preliminary research indicates that there was a tribe of Nagas, aboriginal inhabitants of Sri Lanka, whose name does come from the Sanskrit and Hindi words meaning snake, specifically cobra. The Nagas of Nagaland, however, are indeed of different lineage and their name has a different meaning. This will be researched further and the article revised accordingly.
