invest + -ment, borrowed from Middle French investir or Medieval Latin investire, from Latin investio (to clothe, cover), from in- (in, on) + vestio (to clothe, dress), from vestis (clothing). The sense "to spend money etc." probably via Italian investire, of the same root.
