Where does the word skyscraper come from though?

Kindly forgive the lateness of our reply.

In the third section of the article, Origin of the term, you will find the words which answer your question. “Originally, the term skyscraper was a nautical term for a tall mast or sail on a sailing ship.” The term is centuries old and is derived from the builder’s term for the ship’s masts. In the time of the early sailing ships, climbing to the top of the ship’s mast was probably as far above the earth’s surface as one could get while using a man made object.
