History of nilgiris officially dates back to 1799, when the English in the THIRD mysore WAR DEFEATED Tippoo Sultan, after which the English forces went to wipe out the remnants of Tippoo’s forces, holed up in the Nilgiri HILLS, IN FORTS CALLED DROOGS, which is in existence today, at Coonoor, MURURTI AND kotagiri , and are historical tourist attractions. The ARMY THEN RESTORED THE Mysore maharajah back on the Mysore throne, and the British officers impressed with the beauty of the Nilgiri Hills requested the Mharajah to grant them that teeritory, the Mharajah most willington for saving his dynasty granted them the NILGIRI hills. The MILITARY established OUTPOSTS IMMEDIATELY, so that there could be no regrouping of Tippoo’s scattered forces and handled the administration from a base they called WELLINGTON, IN HONOUR OF THE DUKE OF Wellington ,ARTHUR WELLESLEY, , WHO FOUGHT IN THE MYSORE WARS, AND WHOSE brother, Marquess Richard WELLESLEY, was the GOVERNOR GENERAL OF INDIA. Later the army found it very difficult to handle the civic problems and disputes of the local tribals etc and requested the Governor at Madras to deputy a civic body to handle civic and domestic problems, on the orders of the Governor , one civil official John SULLIVAN WAS SENT, OFFICIALLY TO DO WORK. The army did not like or tolerate his interference in their matters, as they were independant and ruled the roost for quite some time. After ARTHUR WELLESLEY WON THE bATTLE AT wATERLOO, A FAMOUS BRIDGE THAT WAS CONSTRUCTED IN WELLINGTON, WAS ALSO CALLED Waterloo Bridge (Black Bridge,] by the British officers.
