How could Hildegard of Savoy be his wife when the House of Savoy did not exist until 1003? Am I missing something?

Thanks
Jim

Thank you, Jim, for your comment.
Indeed Charlemagne’s wife Hildegard was not of the House of Savoy. However, she was the daughter of Gerald I of Savoy, Count of the Vinzgau. Hildegard was thus known as Hildegard of Savoy, and Hildegard of the Vinzgau. One can assume that the Savoy refers to not to the House of Savoy, which was established in 1003, but to the Alpine region of Savoy which gave its name to the House of Savoy.
