Roadside Snake Charmer - Agra, India

View gregor_y's mapTaken in (See more photos here)I'm not herpetephobic (or whatever you call "fear of snakes"), but this is pretty much about as close as I wanted to get to this cobra. The snake charmer kept encouraging me to get in closer, impatiently beckoning me with hand gestures and saying, "come here! come here!" I was sitting cross-legged in the dirt, and leaned maybe 2 feet away from the snake to take this shot.

I've heard that these snakes are usually de-fanged, and a friend pointed out that it looks like this one has been blinded, rendering it harmless. If so, that's some pretty cruel treatment. Either way, that's still as close as I wanted to get!!
